Received from Dave Hales on
2/2/2007 I just found out that Bob
Bernardon died last night of cancer. For those who didn't know him, he ran
a 39 Chevrolet "Jolly Dolly" that was the one of the prettiest and fastest
gassers in the country in the late 50's and early 60's. Check out p. 27
in the Larry Davis Gasser Wars book. His car was one of the Gassers chosen
for the Gasser Tribute held at the NHRA U.S. Nationals this past Labor
Day. He was there the entire weekend and seemed fine. |

John Carter of Louisville, KY died on Jan 14th in Louisville. John started racing with a 33 Willys A/GS. And moved on to funny cars in the 70s.
"Dandy Dick" Landy died today, 12 Jan, 2007, of kidney failure after being ill for the last few months. Dick was well known in the 60's and 70's for his impressive AWB A/FX cars followed by a string of winning Pro Stockers.

It’s with a heavy heart that we pass along this

The family of the late Sush Matsubara would
like to express our deepest appreciation for the warm words of
sympathy we have received. The outpouring of love and concern from
hundreds of friends and fans has been most heartwarming for us. It
gives us great comfort to know that our son, father, brother,
grandfather, uncle, and dear friend, had such caring people around
him. Thank you again for your kind thoughts and prayers.

Special thanks to Dan Kaplan for permission

"Big John" Mazmanian May 18, 1926 - July 21, 2006
In the glory days of the Gasser Wars, ask an
A/GS fan to name the top 5 cars in the country and, while you'd find
some regional differences, the name of "Big John" Mazmanian would
inevitably be near the top of that list! With equipment
that was always immaculate and ready to race, his cars were always at
or near the top of the heap! In the "drag rags" of the time, the "Big
June" and "Pebble, Pulp & Chef" ads were looked forward to on a weekly
basis and were one of the driving forces in the A/GS match race
circuit.

"Hello, My name is Tracy
Teter. I am the daughter of Larry Teter. I was contacted by a long time
friend of my fathers this evening and he referred me to this Web Site.
Unfortunately I regret to notify you that my father passed away July 1,
2004 in his home. My father was an NHRA national champion in 1961 and
1962. As well as many other great accomplishments. A memorial service will
be held July 31, 2004 in Elgin Illinois. Please see local paper for
listings. I am also looking for any other pictures articles surrounding
my fathers racing career. If you can help with this endeavor it would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. Sincerely; Tracy Teter" This is the type of email I really hate to get. I never met Larry Teter...but I sure did know who he was. As a kid, one of the first models I ever built was a 32 Vickie...Larry's 32 Vickie to be exact. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. Pictures of his car in HRM, etc. was one of the things that got me interested in drag racing to start with. R.I.P Larry. Byron Stack, 30 July 2004 |

On Friday, 25 June, an
announcement was made that Bob Ellison of the Ellison & McGarvey A/GS team
had passed away as a result of injuries received in a racing accident at
the GoodGuys meet at Indy earlier in the month. I didn't know Bob
"back in the daze", but feel fortunate to have met and spent time talking
with him at last year's Gasser Reunion at Thompson, OH. I can
honestly say that we've lost one of the nice guys of the sport.

On that same day, hard on the
heels of that announcement, word reached me that
CJ "Pappy" Hart
had died after suffering a stroke a couple of weeks ago. Many of
you will remember CJ from his days at Santa Ana and Lions dragstrips.
I don't believe that I've ever heard anyone make a single negative comment
about him. The passing of CJ is truly the end of an era. One
of the many comments I read about CJ this weekend was the he was every bit
as important to the roots of drag racing as was Wally Parks. I most
certainly do not disagree! Godspeed Pappy...you will be greatly
missed.

Last night, I found out that
Darrell Russell was killed when a tire blew and took out his wing at over
300mph resulting in a severe crash at the NHRA meet in Madison, IL.
Darrell was a young man and has left us much too early. Our
sympathies go out to Darrell's family and the Joe Amato racing team. Byron Stack, 28 June 2004 |
